Island Food & Spirits

by Hayley Powell

Recently, Mona, Liddy, and I were sitting around Liddy’s kitchen table enjoying a couple of Irish Mudslides that Liddy had concocted for one of our many girls’ night get-togethers where we catch each other up about our week.

I had been toying around with a couple of new dinner-special ideas for St. Patrick’s Day at the restaurant and was asking the girls what they thought about them when Liddy mentioned that she had seen a new Irish onion soup recipe that she thought she might like to try to make the next time we got together.

Well, you would have thought Mona and I had both just been shot out of a cannon because we jumped up so fast, screaming in unison “No!”

Liddy looked at us both, rolled her eyes, and said rather haughtily, “Good Lord, a person burns one dinner and you both think I should be banned from cooking for life!”

Rendered speechless by Liddy’s announcement, Mona and I just gaped at Liddy in utter disbelief as she shrugged her shoulders and continued sipping her Irish Mudslide.

I was dumbfounded. Had she honestly forgotten what had transpired a few years back on another night just like this evening when it was her turn to host the dinner, cocktails, and a night of juicy gossip?

Liddy had never been much of a cook, which we had all learned the hard way with a few cases of food poisoning, a series of unexplained upset stomachs, and quite a few burnt meals. So when Liddy suggested that perhaps she should order out when it was her turn, Mona and I were quick to sign on to that particular plan.

Cooking was just not in Liddy’s wheelhouse. But on the other hand, she did get huge points for her delicious cocktail recipes, so essentially it was a “win-win” for all of us.

When Liddy’s night finally rolled around, I was waiting for Mona to pick me up in her truck, when she called and said she was running a little late since she was stuck at her seafood shop waiting for a customer to pick up an order. I decided to wait for Mona on my deck since it was so lovely outside, and soon found myself dozing off in the warm setting sun. All of a sudden, I was jolted awake by the loud roar of an engine screaming down my street followed by the ear-splitting squealing of tires!

I jumped up to see what in the world was going on and saw Mona’s truck screeching to a halt in my driveway. She yelled for me to hurry and jump in because she had just heard on her police scanner that there was a fire at Liddy’s house! As I ran to hop in the passenger’s side of Mona’s pickup, she was already squealing out of my driveway in reverse while I frantically tried to fasten my seat belt, knowing it was going to be a bumpy hell-raising ride the whole way.

I kept firing off questions to Mona.
